Saudi Arabia To Expand Jeddah Airport

 Saudi Arabia  -  Transport Infrastructure  -  24 Jun 2011

News: The government of Saudi Arabia is to expand the

King Abdul Aziz International Airport in Jeddah in order to handle increasing numbers of religious pilgrims, according to Zawya. The plans have replaced previous ideas to build a new airport in Makkah, which are now considered unfeasible due to location and geography. The Jeddah expansion is hoped to increase the airport's annual passenger handling capacity to 18mn.

BMI View: The expansion of King Abdulaziz International Airport is by far the largest project underway in the aviation sector, and one of the largest construction projects currently underway in the country. The SAR27bn (US$7.2bn) project involves expanding the airport's annual capacity to 30mn passengers (from 17mn currently). King Abdulaziz Airport handled around 15mn passengers in 2010. Passenger numbers have grown substantially in recent years as religious tourism has increased. The airport's location as the gateway to Mecca and Medina means it caters for a substantial increase in of passenger numbers during the Hajj.
